Najimi Juku — Fitting into Japanese Organizations

Not classroom theory — hands-on collaboration. Students absorb Japanese corporate culture while still in school, so they can contribute from day one.

Background

Why Najimi Juku exists

According to JASSO surveys, about 30,000 international students graduate from Japanese universities each year, and roughly 60% of them hope to work in Japan. Sadly, only about half of those who hope to succeed actually do.

There are several reasons. Students often don't fully grasp Japan's unique job-hunting system; companies often haven't prepared their workplaces. But the most important challenge is whether the two sides can communicate — whether the student can truly fit into the team.

To tackle this, we launched Najimi Juku in 2010. The program has four levels; Level 1 is a practical course where students learn Japanese culture and corporate culture through their part-time jobs. It was adopted by universities as a career-support model that same year. By spotting problems at their part-time workplaces and improving them, students develop exactly what Japanese organizations look for: problem-finding, problem-solving, teamwork and communication.

What sets Najimi Juku apart is that it isn't classroom learning — it's collaborative and hands-on. Through this practical program, students internalize Japanese corporate culture and customs while still in school, so they can become productive members of a company early on.
